In 1992, Conway, South Carolina native, Levon Dunn had an idea to create a tourist publication. It would be full of coupons to local businesses, but could also help visitors plan their Grand Strand vacation. Of course, the new publication needed a name that would attract vacationers of all ages and The Monster Coupon Book was born!
Throughout the 80’s and early 90’s, Levon owned OD Surf Shops. OD stood for Ocean Drive located in North Myrtle Beach, which back in those days was the hot spot for many vacationers. Ocean Drive had a unique, laid back, beach attitude that attracted shaggers, surfers, beach lovers and the like. Levon wanted to capture this attitude at the stores, so he came up with a mascot, the “OD Attitoad”, a surfing toad that embraced the beach vibe.
Eventually, Levon sold the beach stores and decided to start the publication. He knew he had to keep that beach attitude going, so the “OD Attitoad” morphed into a “Monster” and thus became the new mascot and The Monster Coupon Book. The book started off as 36 pages, with 41 clients and was printed annually. Some of the same clients we still have today like Eagles, Pacific and Bargain Beachwear stores and Hurricane Fishing Fleet! Over the years the book has grown as did the company. We currently have 170 clients and print over a million books a year! To keep up with the digital age, a website was added as well as social media pages and an app to bring coupons from the printed book to people digitally.
In 2021, Levon decided it was time to retire. He sold The Monster Coupon Book to Intellistrand, LLC and the company joined forces with www.myrtlebeach.com to include hotel and resort savings as well! Visitors can now save from the time they book their vacation to the places they visit, eat, shop and play while visiting the Grand Strand. We are thankful for our clients and our users throughout the years, without each other we wouldn’t have made it through tough times. We are so happy that we can continue to help people visiting the Grand Strand save money! It has been and will always be The Monster Coupon Book’s purpose.
